about the Black Youth Filmmaking Fellowship Program
This summer program is designed as an opportunity for Ottawa-based Black Youth ages 16-25 to acquire fundamental knowledge , build skills and gain experience towards building a successful career in the film, media and TV industries.
The program will provide hands-on curated workshops and masterclasses from industry professionals, access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment at Lenz Studio, and opportunities to network and build relationships with industry members. The program will culminate in the production of 2 short films addressing any social issue in the city of Ottawa, written and directed by cohort participants. Participants will be key players in the production of these films alongside mentors in specific departments.
- This program will enable its participants with skills that they can carry into their activism, their communities, and their future careers.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

WEEK 1-3: Screenwriting
Screenwriting focuses on the fundamental principles and key elements of storytelling. Fellows analyze short stories for narrative structure, character design, dialogue, genre, and tone before applying them to their own scripts

WEEK 4-7:TECHNOLOGY IN FILM
Participants will learn about everything technical in film making. They will learn camera basics, lighting & composition in Cinematography, Sound, Film Editing.

WEEK 8: FILM DIRECTING
Participants will learn how to make shot lists and storyboards, blocking, protocols of dealing with professional actors, reading scripts, the construction of film sequences and more.

WEEK 9-11: FILM BUSINESS
From financing, legal and production to marketing and distribution. Participants will Learn all the steps it takes to get on the inside track to becoming a successful producer.

WEEK 12: PROJECT SHOWCASE
Final project showcase to members of the community. It will be either a virtual event or a viewing at a location contingent on covid-19 restrictions.

- Must be 16-25 years old
- Identify as a person of color
- Demonstrate a passion for media & film

As a tutor/mentor you will make an invaluable and well-deserved contribution to the growth of our summer Fellows. Mentors create a roadmap to help our Fellows overcome obstacles. For just a few hours a week in the duration of this program, you will help guide and support our fellows with subject-matter and industry knowledge.
